When you think about adopting a child, your mind may go automatically to adopting an infant or young child. There is a lack of people willing to adopt older children, especially teens.

Guidance
Adopting an older child or teen gives you the opportunity to help shape that child’s life. Even though they are almost to the point of being independent, it does not mean they are ready for it. In fact, many people who age out of the system have no support system and end up in dire situations. You can step up and prevent this from happening for at least one child.
Still time
While you may think you will have no time with this child because of his or her age, that is not always true. There are plenty of teens who want a family, and a teen is not an adult yet. There is still plenty of time for you to bond and make him or her part of your family. You can then enjoy the bond with your adopted adult child for life.
More involvement
One great thing about adopting teens is they have the chance to be a part of the process. Unlike younger children, you can talk with a teen about what he or she wants. You can build up a relationship more easily and learn more about the teen’s past. This can allow you to bond right from the beginning because you know that the teen is on board with the adoption.
