What makes a good surrogate?

On Behalf of | Sep 16, 2021 | surrogacy and reproductive technology

Choosing a surrogate to carry your child is a huge decision, and it takes a lot of consideration to ensure you make the right choice. This can be difficult if you have no idea where to even start.

Surrogates are essentially employees, but their job is to create and maintain the life of your child. You need to be able to trust she can safely fulfill the job. Here are a few things to keep in mind about what makes a good surrogate, according to the Pacific Fertility Center.

Health

A surrogate should be healthy. He or she should not have a history of any type of illness or condition. You need to be sure her reproductive health is stellar and that she has no potential risks with carrying a baby to full term. She should be free of any habits that could harm the baby, such as smoking or drinking.

History

Your surrogate should already have gone through a pregnancy and given birth. This helps to ensure she can do it and that she understands fully what will happen. You also want to check her background to ensure there is no criminal history or abuse in her past that could put your child at risk.

Age

You want to ensure your surrogate is within a good age range for a healthy pregnancy. Ideally, this is between the ages of 21 and 40.

Mental state

Your surrogate should be well prepared to enter into this relationship. Carrying a baby and then giving it away can be difficult. Your surrogate needs to be completely on board with the plan and understand fully what it entails. You need to ensure she is willing and able to carry out the duties.

A good surrogate will understand the job, be in good physical health and be ready to provide a safe and secure experience for your child.
