There are many myths and misconceptions out there about what it takes to become an adoptive parent in North Carolina. If you are thinking about trying to become one, you may have questions about the process and whether you are eligible to do so.
According to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, the criteria for adopting a child in the state is as follows.
Adoptive parent criteria
Before you may begin the process of finding a child to adopt, you must be at least 18 years of age. If you plan to foster a child first, you must be at least 21 to do so. There are not any restrictions as far as how much you have to make or whether you need to own your own home to adopt. However, you show that you are ready to welcome a child into your life and that you have what it takes to accommodate the child’s physical, emotional, social and academic needs.
Adoptive parent considerations
If you determine that you meet the criteria needed to become an adoptive parent, you may want to ask yourself some important questions before you proceed. Do you have the ability and support necessary to add a new child to your life on a permanent basis? Are you prepared to keep your adopted child in your home, even when things get difficult? Are you ready to advocate for your adopted child’s interests and accommodate any special needs or emotional issues he or she may have?
Adopting a child is a serious decision. However, if you answer yes to the questions outlined above, you may have what it takes to provide a comfortable, safe home for a child who deserves one.
