How do you prepare for becoming a single adoptive parent?

On Behalf of | Apr 12, 2022 | adoption

Perhaps you are single but long to have a child of your own. The most obvious solution, of course, is adoption.

No matter how you view the adoption process, it will require a period of adjustment for both you and the child. How do you prepare to become a single parent?

Training for adoption

Adoption experts develop most of the training for soon-to-be single parents. A training curriculum is available for a variety of situations. You may want to adopt a teen, a child with an attachment disorder or other special needs. You may want to explore a transracial adoption. No matter what your future holds as a single parent, training is available to help you prepare.

Working and parenting

As a single person, you are probably employed. In raising your child, think about the hours you must spend at work and commuting. When you become a parent, your responsibilities will increase around meal preparation, housework and the day-to-day care of your child. Will your employer understand if you need to leave work suddenly to manage a childcare issue? Can you work remotely if your child is ill?

Relying on support

It will be important for you to have a support system when you become a single parent. Here are some questions to think about:

  • Do your friends and family stand ready to lend support if you need help in raising your child?
  • Is there someone nearby who can help in an emergency or when your child is sick?
  • Is there someone who can pick up your child from school if you cannot do so?

Also, remember to seek legal help to create a will as a new parent and to name a guardian for your child in the event of your death.
